Bookmark-Worthy Best Practices for Multilingual Websites
Posted by: Scott Johnson, Co-Founder and Principal Jan 21, 2010 0 Comments
As I mentioned in another post earlier this week, I’m a huge fan of the work that’s gone into GobiernoUSA.gov, the Spanish-language version of the USA.gov web portal. Not only does it make it easy for Spanish-speaking citizens to find information that they need and gain access to resources, but it also provides a living case study of best practices for developing multilingual websites.
The managers of GobiernoUSA.gov along with the Federal Multilingual Websites Committee have documented a list of the top 10 best practices for multilingual websites. Based on the Hispanic Online Best Practices developed by our friend Lee Vann over at Captura Group, the list spells out language and cultural considerations, in addition to highlighting integration touchpoints and making recommendations on the importance of managing expectations.
If your business or government agency is even remotely considering the prospect of a multilingual website, bookmark this resource. The experience and expertise that the authors bring to the table is invaluable.
